Heavy Snow Returns to Forecast in SW Nebraska
Blizzard warnings have been posted for southwest Nebraska and northwest Kansas through Saturday. Rain is expected to fall later this evening, switching to all snow after midnight. Snow, heavy at times, is expected to continue through Friday night and Saturday morning. Police say a man shot at a home in Omaha has died, and an arrest warrant has been issued for a 27-year-old suspect in the shooting. Police say 26-year-old Philip Burden died yesterday afternoon at an Omaha hospital after officers responded to a shooting report just before 8:30 a.m. Saturday.
20-Year-Old North Platte Man Arrested On Suspicion Of Child Abuse
A 20-year-old North Platte man has been arrested on suspicion of child abuse after medics discovered his infant had a broken arm. North Platte television station KNOP-TV reports that emergency workers were called to the man's home Friday afternoon where they discovered a 3-month-old baby with a broken arm. The medics then called police.
New Bill Set Drop Out Date For Nebraska Students
Students in Nebraska schools would not be able to drop out until they turn 18, under a bill set for a legislative hearing. Lexington Senator John Wightman has introduced a measure that would require school attendance for students until they graduate, turn 18, or complete a private education program. Wightman will present his measure to the Legislature's Education Committee today.

A Big Week For Catholic Schools
The All Saints Catholic School and Little Saints Pre-school in Holdrege have had a busy week, celebrating Catholic Schools Week. Father Tom Lux, a guest on KUVR Wednesday, said that students have had a different theme each day this week. The school is in it's 11th year with 60 students. The school is open to students in grades K-4 of all denominations of faith.
Leadership Night For Holdrege FFA'rs
There were 14 Holdrege FFA members receiving their Greenhand Degrees and 15 Chapter FFA degrees going out during the recent FFA Banquet. Instructor Jeff Moore said that Greenhand awards go to first year members and Chapter degrees go to second year members. The Holdrege FFA will have their annual Barbecue this Friday during the Duster basketball games.
Power Line Construction Is Progressing
The construction is underway on the Axtell to Kansas powerline that is being undertaken by NPPD. Foundation digging is underway for the 53-mile line and the structure building will begin in the spring. The line, which will carry 345,000 volts, will extend from Axtell south to the Kansas border and hook up with ITC line, which goes to the Wichita area.
Franklin County's Rhonda Herrick Receives Extension Honor
Rhonda Herrick, Extension Representative from Franklin County, was honored recently during the Fall Conference of the Nebraska Cooperative Extension and the UNL Extension, held in Kearney. Rhonda was presented with the Distinguished Service Award for her many years of top performance working with Franklin County 4-H members.
Holdrege Man On American Idol (Sort Of)
Holdrege area residents who were tuned into American Idol on Wednesday night were more than surprised when they thought they saw Merlin Wilke. It was, in fact, the long time Holdrege resident. The show was actually taped in Savannah, Georgia in August, the same time Merlin and his wife were there. He was caught on camera while in line for a city tour.
Axtell School To Raze Old Township Hall
The Axtell Board of Education has decided the property is more important than the building. They recently voted to demolish the old Mirage Township Hall, which sits on the school property between the school and the bus barn. Cost for the demolition and removal of asbestos will be just under $19,000. The property, when cleared, will be used for school parking
Phelps County Sheriffs Office Completes Mini-Grant Program
The Phelps County Sheriffs Office completed the "You Drink, You Drive, You Lose" Campaign recently with 60 overtime hours paid by the state. The effort showed six arrests for DUI, four for driving under suspension, nine outstanding warrants and two persons charged with minor in possession. The monetary value of the grant was $1955.
A New Business In Holdrege
There is a new business in Holdrege. Opening recently at 617 Third Avenue was Osteo Strong.me, which is a new concept in health.
