The Oberlin speech meet scheduled for Feb. 4 has been postponed for a later date. Also, the Rawlins County Sportsman's Banquet in Atwood has been postponed until Feb. 11.
Norton National Guard Unit Now Deploying To SW Asia
The 170th Maintenance Company Kansas National Guard unit in Norton is preparing for its first deployment since Operation Desert Storm. The unit will be heading to Southwest Asia for a base security mission. A public departure ceremony is scheduled for Feb. 12 in Salina for the 80 members of the company. The soldiers will arrive at Camp Shelby Joint Forces Training Center in Mississippi for training specific to their assignment before heading to Asia. The unit was originally scheduled to go to Kuwait for a security mission. The 170th Maintenance Company is based in Norton, with a subordinate unit based in Colby. The company is part of the Hays-based 287th Special Troop Battalion.
Oakley Woman Crashes Into House
The Kansas Highway Patrol responded to an accident in Oakley after a car crashed into a house Wednesday night. According to the Kansas Highway Patrol, Debra Campbell, age 55, of Oakley was traveling north in an alley in Oakley around 6:50 p.m. when she attempted a left turn onto 8th street. She then lost control of her vehicle causing her to turn back south onto Hoeb street. She then crossed the west side of the street and crashed into a house. Campbell was transported to Logan County Hospital with possible injuries. No occupants of the home were injured.
Hoxie Man Killed In Accident Near Grainfiled
An accident early Tuesday morning claimed the life of a 19-year-old Hoxie man. According to the Kansas Highway Patrol, around 4:20 yesterday morning, Nathan Barnhart was driving west on Highway 40 about a mile west of Grainfield, when he lost control of his vehicle and rolled after entering the south ditch. The vehicle then came to rest on its wheels. Barnhart, who was not wearing a seat belt, was thrown from the vehicle.
MCC Names New Interim VP
Ryan Purdy, Interim president of Mid-Plains Community College has selected Michele Gill to serve as the Interim Vice President of McCook Community College. According to Purdy, she will simultaneously serve in her current position as MPCC’s Area Dean of Student Lif e along with the VP appointment. Gill will begin her duties effective this Friday, February 3rd.
