Bison Wrestlers Finish 6th

The McCook Bison wrestlers finished sixth at the Greater Nebraska Conference meet in Norfolk on Saturday. Kearney won the meet with 207.5 points. North Platte was second and Scottsbluff third. The Bison scored 69 points. MHS senior Skyler Kalinski was McCook's lone champion, winning the 152-pound weight class. The Bison will travel to Gothenburg for the Class B4 district meet on Friday and Saturday.  

 

National Signing Day

National signing day is today and all Nebraska football fans will want to know who their future Huskers are. NU has 14 commitments entering the day, but very well could be announcing a class with 18 or 19 names by the time Bo Pelini holds his press conference at 2:30. Included in the drama is the televised announcement of one five-star Husker recruiting target. Offensive tackle Andrus Peat could become the first five- star recruit (using the Rivals.com rankings) to sign with Nebraska since Baker Steinkuhler in 2008.  


RPAC Champs - Paxton and Hitchcock County

The Paxton boys and Hitchcock County girls won the RPAC Conference basketball titles on Saturday at Southwest. The Falcons stayed unbeaten with a 54-35 win over Southern Valley to win the RPAC girls championship. Paxton edged Southern Valley 43-42 to win the boys title. Southwest defeated Hayes Center 37-28 in the girls third-place game while Arapahoe defeated Dundy County-Stratton 70-69 in overtime in the boys third-place game.

NU WRESTLING-HUSKERS DROP TWO IN A ROW OVER THE WEEKEND

The No. 7 Nebraska wrestling team dropped its second consecutive dual on Sunday, Feb. 5, falling to the No. 4 Minnesota Gophers, 26-7, in Minneapolis, Minn. The Huskers, who dropped four matches by three points or less, fall to 14-2 on the year and 5-3 in the Big Ten Conference. Minnesota improved to 10-3 and 7-1 in the conference. 

 

NEBRASKA MEN’S HOOPS-HUSKERS FALL AT HOME TO MINNESOTA

 Bo Spencer's 18 led three Huskers in double figures, but a second half scoring drought doomed Nebraska in a 69-61 loss to Minnesota Sunday afternoon.The Huskers and Gophers were tied at 39 with 12:27 left after Spencer hit a pair of free throws, but then went scoreless for nearly six minutes, as Minnesota (17-7, 5-6 Big Ten) used a 9-0 run to take the lead for good.

HUSKERS' TARGETS TO ANNOUNCE DECISIONS
 Five of Nebraska's top football recruiting targets are scheduled to announce their decisions this morning. One of the undecideds is offensive tackle Andrus Peat of Tempe, Arizona. His brother Todd joined the Huskers last year. Nebraska expects to sign at least 14 players to letters of intent.

LONGHORNS GAME IS RESCHEDULED

The Chase Co. vs NP St. Patricks Boys and Girls Varsity Basketball games that were scheduled to take place on Friday, Feb. 3rd have been rescheduled due to severe weather forecasts. The games will now be held in North Platte tomorrow Thursday, Feb. 2nd beginning around 4:30 pm.

 

LAKERS THUMP THE BOBCATS

Kobe Bryant scored 24 points, Andrew Bynum added 20, and the Lakers beat slumping Charlotte 106-73 in their final home game before beginning their annual Grammy trip on Friday at Denver. The Lakers are a dominant 11-2 at home, but only 2-7 away from Staples Center.

Dusters Set To Travel This Weekend

The Holdrege Duster basketball teams, unable to play last Friday against GINW due to the weather, will be traveling northeast twice this weekend. Holdrege will face Central 10 foe Central City Friday night, airing at 5:45 on 1380 KUVR and will make their first trip to St. Paul in a number of years Saturday with airtime at 5pm on KUVR.

 

Dusters Will Face Vikings Friday, Saturday Or Monday

The Holdrege Dusters and GINW Vikings has become a semi-rivalry with up to three games a year.  A visit Thursday with boys coach Jerry Buck and A.D. Scott Schoneman revealed that the teams will play this weekend as allowable with the weather. If weather postpones the games on Friday, they would play Saturday, or possibly Monday nights in Holdrege.

 Minden Girls Stay #1

The Minden Whippets lost a four point overtime thriller to Class B Holdrege but it didn't hurts their top ranking in Class C-1. This week's ratings have Minden remaining at number one with a 13-2 record. The Loomis Wolves are also in the top 10 this week. Jim Rayburn's team is ranked seventh in Class D-2 with a 10-3 record. Holdrege is ranked fourth in Class B.

 

 Huskers, Buckeyes On 1380 KUVR

The Nebraska Mens Basketball team finally broke through Wednesday night with a win over a ranked team, downing 11th ranked Indiana 70-69. Now, even a bigger challenge, as Big 10 favorite Ohio State comes calling to Lincoln on Saturday. Ohio State, also one of the pre-season favorties to make the Final 4, beat NU by 31 earlier this month. Airtime is 6pm with tipoff at 7pm on 1380 KUVR.

 

Hoosiers, Huskers On KUVR

Bobby Knight never coached at the Devaney Center, in fact Indiana has never played there...until Wednesday night. In Big 10 action the 11th ranked Hoosiers visit Nebraska for a 6pm game, to be heard on 1380 KUVR. Indiana fell hard Sunday, losing by double digits at Ohio State while the Cornhuskers lost a 5 point game at Wisconsin.

 

 Holdrege YMCA To Offer Instruction From Former Pac-12 Player

The YMCA of the Prairie in Holdrege has the services of a former women's college basketball player at Washington State for this year's Girls Basketball Clinic. Katie Bohnhoff, a former starting point guard for the Cougars, will instruct the class in Holdrege on January 21 and 28. For more information, girls in grades 5-8 should contact the Y at 995-4050.


Duster Wrestlers Have A Busy Day

The Holdrege wrestling teams, both the varsity and junior varsity hit the mats Friday. The Duster varsity will wrestle at the Minden Dual Invite, facing the Whippets and three other teams, starting at 3pm. The junior varsity travel to Elm Creek where they will face varsity wrestlers from several Class C and D schools.


Husker Wide Receiver Recruit Says No To The Irish

Husker football recruiting got bit of good news this week when Four-star wide receiver Jordan Westerkamp said that he now a solid committment to Nebraska and has said "thanks, but no thanks" to Notre Dame. Westerkamp, a high school standout in Illinois, committed to Nebraska several months ago but was recently courted by Notre Dame and made a visit to their campus in South Bend, Indiana. Several recruiting services have said that Westerkamp will have a chance to play immediately for Nebraska.


Two Dusters, A Whippet, And An Eagle Rated In Wrestling

This week's wrestling ratings have two Holdrege Dusters in the top six of their weight class. At 106 pounds, Jacob Fuehrer is rated fourth while Richard Yanez is at number 5 at 126 pounds. Southern Valley's Dexter Becker is second in Class C at 195 pounds and Minden has Jake Raffety ranked third at 170 pounds. Each of those teams is in action this weekend, following a long layoff from the holidays.
