Wrestling This Week

Sports Director Joel Janecek and Mick Barth will be broadcasting live from the 2012 Kansas Class 3-2-1A State Wrestling Tournament at Fort Hays State University this Thursday and Friday, Feb. 23-24. The tournament starts at 10:00 am on Thursday and 9:00 am on Friday. Coverage gets underway with the most extensive pre-tournament show at 9:30 on Thursday and at 8:45 on Friday. Red Devil Girls Fall In Regular Season Finale

Oberlin traveled to Phillipsburg on Feb 20 for the final regular season basketball game of the year. In girls action, the Panthers took a 32-13 lead into halftime, and then expanded on it in the second half, adding 30 more points. The final favored Phillipsburg, 62-24. For the Panthers, Raegan Vanderplas had 14 points, Regan Bartels and Mattison Dusin each added 12, while Jordan Kellerman scored 10. Alexis Hissong led with eight for Oberlin, Darbi Rouse and Miki Dorshorst each had 6, while Hannah May added four. The Red Devils end the regular season at 3-16.

 

Oberlin Boys Steal One on the Road

After seeing a 13-point fourth-quarter lead narrow to just two, the Oberlin boys were able to ice the game from the free throw line, beating Phillipsburg 51-44 on the road Feb. 20. Oberlin led 21-17 at halftime and was fueled by strong second-half performances from both Ryan May and Zach May. Ryan had a hat-trick of three-pointers in the third quarter, while Zach tallied 19 points in the second half alone. Sean Newlan led the Panthers with 15 points. Seth Derr had 13 and Grant Wickham added 12. For Oberlin, Zach May led with 26 points, while Ryan May had 11 and Dalton Jones contributed 10. Oberlin ends the regular season with an 8-11 overall record.


NW Kansas Wrestlers Represent Well at Regionals

A total of 19 wrestlers from Rawlins County, Oakley, Hoxie and Oberlin qualified for the class 3-2-1A state wrestling tournament set for later this week. The wrestler participated in the regional tournament in Lakin Friday and Saturday, Feb. 17-18. Oberlin ended up winning the meet, while Hoxie finished fourth, Oakley was sixth, and Rawlins County finished just outside of the top 10 in the 24-team regional, at 12th. Area competitors headed to state are: Rawlins County- Macrae Migchelbrink and John Solko. Oakley- Taylor Murphy, Levi Hefner, Eric Albers, Jason Berkgren and Cody Faulkender. Hoxie- Drew Jones, Calvin Ochs, Dalton Snyder, Steven Yergey-Dible, Brandon Salmans and Kane Washington. Oberlin- Troy Juenemann, Dayton Dreher, Brent Juenemann, Kade Brown, Jeff Shaw and Channing Fortin.
